Our Instructors' Bios
Kate Stephenson is an experienced leader in the fields of green building, professional education, sustainability, and business management, and is co-owner of HELM Construction Solutions. She’s worked with established and emerging businesses and non-profits to achieve triple bottom line metrics, develop business systems, and plan for a dynamic and resilient future. Prior to co-founding HELM in 2016, she led the Yestermorrow Design/Build School for over thirteen years. Her design and planning expertise includes a foundation in regenerative design principles and master plan development. Kate helped to develop and is a facilitator for NESEA’s BuildingEnergy Bottom Lines program. Kate is a Senior Fellow of the Environmental Leadership Program, the Chair of the Montpelier Energy Advisory Committee, and serves on the Board of the Vermont Council on Rural Development. She is a Certified Passive House Builder and a QuickBooks Certified ProAdvisor. She holds a MS in Management from Antioch University New England and a BA in Anthropology and Environmental Science from Haverford College.
As an active design/builder and green building expert, Adam Cohen is a leading North American Passivhaus practitioner whose innovative work on market rate delivery of commercial high performance building has made his expertise sought-after for projects across North America. As a recognized national leader in the Passivhaus movement he has presented technical papers at both national and international Passivhaus conferences. His leadership in commercial Passivhaus design has made him a sought after speaker, consultant and teacher of advanced courses in Passivhaus ultra-low energy design. He served for 5 years as Vice-Chair of the Passive House Institute US technical committee from it's founding in 2010 and is co-creator and teacher of Passive House Institute US’s builder training curriculum.
Mike Duclos is a principal and founder of the DEAP Energy Group, LLC, a consultancy providing a wide variety of Deep Energy Retrofit, Zero Net Energy and Passive House related consulting services. Mike is a founder, on the board of directors, and is director of education of Energy Raters of Massachusetts, Inc., a RESNET certified HERS Provider specifically catering to independent HERS Raters in New England. Mike also founded Energy Efficiency Associates, LLC to provide conventional home HERS, energy audit, Stretch Code, tax certification and associated verification and consulting services. Mike is a founder and on the board of directors of Passive House Massachusetts, an organization promoting high performance ‘passive house inspired’ building technology and education. Mike is both a Certified Passive House Consultant and PHIUS+ Rater, has pre-certified and certified Passive House homes with both PHIUS and PHI, and is working as a PHIUS+ Rater on a home pursuing certification with PHIUS.
donald l. grose
Donald L. Grose is the principal of D.L. Grose + Associates that specializes in energy-efficient and sustainable residential design, consulting and construction management. Donald has been designing and building high-performance homes and additions for more than 40 years, with experience in residential building design, construction, land use planning and development. He has designed and constructed more than 60 energy-efficient, high-performance single-family homes in the United States and Internationally, as well as award-winning remodeling and renovation projects, law offices, retail stores, and health care facilities. Donald is a LEED BD+C Accredited Professional and is certified as a Green Globes ProfessionalTM. He’s a member of the US Green Building Council, the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, and the International Living Future Institute, and is an adjunct faculty member of Boston Architectural College, where he teaches a course in Green Residential Remodeling and Renovation.
